The car, a gift from the Car Association for the Queen in her Silver Jubilee year of 1977, is a State Car that is exclusively used for transporting members of the Royal family.

Until recently it was the preferred car of choice for the Queen.

With a standard Rolls-Royce priced around £250,000, it is believed the special model would cost in excess of £1 million to install all of its security measures.

It has “toughened glass” that can withstand heavy objects being thrown through it although it is not thought to be bullet-proof. It easily withstood the bottles thrown at it.

Sitting outside the London Palladium theatre, the car’s window could be seen visibly shattered, but not smashed 【2】.

“Some aspects of the protection worked,” said a security source.

“Whether it was by good luck or anything else is not known.”

“Clearly if it wasn’t paint no doubt something more serious who knows what could have happened."

The car is a “high-top”, meaning it has a higher roofline and larger windows. It is painted in royal claret livery.

It is always followed by motorbike outriders.

Last night it was being followed by two other cars in the Royal convey, a Jaguar with Royal Protection officers and a black Ford Galaxy with Clarence House staff.

A Clarence House spokesman said he would not discuss any aspects of security.
